Cefuroxime (tab: axetil; inj: Na)
Indications/Uses
Susceptible infections including bone & joint infections, gonorrhea, skin & soft tissue infections & UTIs, (tab) bronchitis, otitis media, peritonitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis & (inj) lower resp tract infections, meningitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Zefur Adult Resp tract infections 250-500 mg bid. Zefur IV/IM Adult 750 mg 8 hrly IM or IV. Severe life-threatening or lower resp tract infections 1.5 g 8 hrly IV. Bacterial meningitis 3 g 8 hrly IV. Uncomplicated gonorrhea 1.5 g IM single dose in 2 equally divided inj (1 in each buttock) w/ oral probenecid 1 g. Bone & joint infections 1.5 g 8 hrly IV. Infant & childn (1 mth-12 yr) 30-100 mg/kg/day divided in 3 or 4 equally divided doses. Most infections 60 mg/kg/day. Bacterial meningitis 200-240 mg/kg/day IV in 3 or 4 equally divided doses. Bone & joint infections 70-150 mg/kg/day 8 hrly IV. Neonate ≤1 mth 30-100 mg/kg/day in 2 or 3 equally divided doses. Open heart surgery 1.5 g IV initially (w/ anesth) then 12 hrly thereafter for 48 hr.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Special Precautions
Do not give in patients w/ hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Adverse Reactions
Skin rashes, urticaria, eosinophilia, fever, reactions resembling serum sickness & anaphylaxis.
Drug Interactions
Reduced renal clearance w/ Probenecid. Zefur IV/IM Aminoglycosides eg, gentamicin sulfate, tobramycin sulfate, amikacin sulfate; probenecid, diuretics eg, furosemide & ethacrynic acid.
